Let me ask you this.

Do you feel you can take a vacation and turn your business “off” – at least in your mind – without your business actually turning off?

In other words, can you take a rejuvenating break, knowing your business (and you) will both be just fine when you return?

Being an entrepreneur, especially a women in business online, is an emotionally invested kind of gig.

In my last article I wrote that having a business is kind of like having a child. You want to see your biz and your kids (or nieces, nephews, etc.) grow up and experience success.

Just like sometimes needing a break from the daily demands of children, you also need a break from the daily demands of your business.

It’s 100% about rejuvenation.

Being rested – physically, mentally and spiritually – leads to better creativity, focus, confidence, and ultimately, better results for your clients and therefore your business.

Who wouldn’t want that? I can guarantee your clients do.

In my mind, a bunch of variables come into play:

What’s your definition of a REAL vacation?

Do your services allow for a natural break?

Do you plan your year so you know the best time to take a break?

Do you have any flexibility for when you can take a vacation?

What kind of outsourcing do you have in place?

What processes have you automated?

Are you caught up with your invoicing and your expenses?

What’s your cash flow situation through the remainder of the year?

Do you have multiple streams of income to rely on?

How much work can you plan in advance of your vacation?

Are you able to line up contracts for your return?

How long is your vacation?

Do you want to continue to generate income while you’re gone?

Do you want to shut down your business while you’re away?

Is your plan to operate your biz while you’re away but at a “light” capacity, covering off the basics?

Is your goal to continue to run your business but from a different location?

This is quite a list! Of course, my goal is not to create fear so you stay home and never take a break.

If you know me by now, you’ll know it’s quite the opposite.

It’s for you to get rest and rejuvenation so you can be 100% for your clients and your family. It’s about helping your business not miss a beat while you’re away.

Here are my suggestions, hopefully this will make it more tangible for you:

Book your free time for the entire year. Take out your calendar and book your days off from your business. What are your dedicated days to be with your family and to do things that rejuvenate you? When is a natural time to take your vacations this year? Get those dates in your calendar and double check they work for your family, too.

Envision your ideal vacation(s). Yup, I mean actually create a vision for it. Ask yourself this question: At the end of my vacation, what has to have happened, both personally and professionally, for me to feel happy with my progress? Write it as though you’ve already accomplished it.

Reverse engineer your vision. Once you know your vision, you can then work backwards from there to make it real. What do you need to put into place to make it happen? This totally depends on your own vision and your answers to the questions I asked earlier.

Whatever your vision, the point is to be intentional about it and put the pieces into place to allow you to have it.

Now, I’d love to hear from you. In the comments below this article, answer one of these questions or both if you’re in a sharing mood!

What’s your personal definition of a “real” vacation?

What tips do you have for taking a vacation without your business turning off?

Thanks for sticking to the end and have a great week!

P.S. My 8-week Survive to Thrive Solopreneur Bootcamp starts in 13 days! Register for the program here: http://nadinenicholson.com/stsb-pilot.

I believe this is what makes – and breaks – solopreneur success.

The other two parts are:

Part 1 (Feb. 2, 2012)

Part 2 (Feb. 9, 2012)

Here are three more of my favourite solopreneur mindset must haves… make sure you read right to the end. I saved the best for the last.

#1: Set your business up right, right from the start.

Make sure your business is set up as well as you possibly can, no matter what stage your business is at. If you’re just starting out, good for you! The field is wide open to invest your money and time in the places that make the biggest difference. This is also the point when the multitude of actions required to run your business probably seem overwhelming.

Earlier this week I took a workshop that taught me to focus my time doing the tasks that I’m best suited do to, the ones where I use my unique ability. As part of the prep work, I brainstormed all the tasks required to operate my solo business, both those I do them myself and those I hire someone else to do for me. I came up with 60 tasks!

If I had seen that list when I first started my business, I probably would have been completely overwhelmed. Back in those days, I tried my best to do the right things first, second, third, etc. Unfortunately, though, I did a few things too early and those mistakes cost me time and money. As I think back, I’d have loved to have known what to do first and what not to worry about until my business was further along.

For example, I spent money on graphic design too early in my business. I hired a designer to do some images before I had my “big why” sorted out. I had good intentions but simply wasn’t focused on the biggest return opportunities at the right time. And, it cost me. That’s why one of the first things I help my clients do is figure out their own “big why”… why they’re in business in the first place. Once you’ve have that, you’re golden!

To see the “must haves” that need to be in place to have a successful business, you’ve got to go up to 30,000 feet to look at the big picture. It’s all about focusing your energy on what’s most important at the right time.

#2: Slide into the driver’s seat of your business.

It’s super easy to become a slave to your business, to let your business overtake you. Pretty soon you’re thinking about your business 24/7 and trying to do everything by yourself. It happens before you know it.

You’re emotionally invested in your business. It’s kind of like having a child. If you started your business yourself – which most solopreneurs do – you want to see it grow up and be successful. Just like having a child, sometimes you may be too “involved” in the business’s life and before you know it, it’s running you. That can happen with kids too – they can wrap us around their little fingers. My four-year-old often seems to have the magic touch with that skill! LOL.

Here’s where I’m going with this. You’re the CEO of your company, you’re in charge and calling the shots. You get to decide your own boundaries, like when you work, where you work, who you work with, and the rates you charge. By setting – and honouring – boundaries, your clients will respect you and will be more likely to work with you because you’re clear about how you work. You’ll be a role model.

Having this mindset isn’t as easy as it sounds. Yet, ironically it’s quite simple. Being the boss of your business is simply a decision. It’s about making a conscious choice and about deciding how you want things to be so you can deliver the best possible service to your clients.

#3: It’s about progress, not perfection.

It took me a while to figure this one out. I believe this is the most fundamental, most important factor to having a solopreneur success mindset. This one thing separates women who experience success and happiness in all areas of their lives and those who experience guilt and failing to achieve perfection.

I learned this concept from Dan Sullivan from Strategic Coach. He teaches entrepreneurs like Fabienne Fredrickson and Joe Polish, and they’re mighty successful.

Here’s the crux of how it works. Dan says all people set “ideals” for themselves. An ideal is a picture you create for the future that helps you move forward. It inspires your establish goals and motivates you. Dan says ideals are “mental constructs” — a tool of your brain to come to grips with the fture. The ideal doesn’t actually exist, at least outside of your mind.

Then, there are the “actuals” or the actual achievements in your business and life.

Successful solopreneurs measure current achievements against past achievements, NOT against ideals. They simply measure one experience against another. These business owners lead lives of continual progress, success and happiness.

On the other hand, if a business owner measures her achievements against their ideals, she can never be successful because her ideals are mental constructs and not achieveable. She feel she’s missing the mark and constantly coming up short. She’ll feel disappointment, failure and potentially depression.

A business owner who measures achievements against past achievements more likely has a sense of success. She’s confident, more joyful and optimistic because the future has always turned out to be better than the past.

So what can you do to avoid this trap? Here are three tips:

1. Get clarity on lifetime ideals that are bigger than you. Take a whole day to write your lifetime ideals, which Dan suggests should fit on one sheet of paper. Make sure your goals are about improving the world. Ask yourself this question, “In what ways do I want the world to be a better place for my having been there?”

2. Consciously and specifically set your goals. Write down your goals and give yourself deadlines. Make sure they’re specific and measureable. Review your progress daily so you can see it. If there’s a way to track your progress, even better.

3. Continually celebrate your progress. The importance of this can’t be underestimated, especially for high-achieving, success-driven women in business. Here are a few ways to do just that…

Get a beautiful journal and write your achievements each day. Then, when you have a bad day (and you will) go back and read your entries so you can remind yourself you’re making great progress.

Consciously make a choice to take an afternoon off and treat yourself to a massage.

Buy your favourite pair of Lululemon pants. (If you wear them as much as I do, you may want your favourite ones in a bunch of colours.)

Have a long bubble bath with your favourite candles and relaxing music.

Share your achievements with a colleague and ask her to share her successes.

Celebration is about showing gratitude. Gratitude is about abundance. Abundance is a way to supercharge your solopreneur mindset.

I believe mindset is what makes – and breaks – solopreneur success.

Click here to read the first of the series. Here are three more of my favourite solopreneur success mindset must haves.

#1: You are YOU, exactly where you need to be right now.

You’re going to see other successful entrepreneurs everywhere. Look how easy it is to find successful women in business online. You may even be subscribed to a number of their blogs.

I bet they seem more advanced. You may look at them in awe. You’ll ask how they have it all together, and how do they have it all figured out.

Maybe your mind wanders and you compare yourself to them. That nasty comparison trap sets in and you can hear yourself saying you’re not enough, you haven’t done enough or you’re not where you need to be.

Here’s something that took me a while to figure out. You can’t possibly know the whole story of what’s happening in someone else’s business. You only see the tip of the iceberg and can’t possibly see in the inner workings or the behind-the-scenes.

What you CAN focus on is YOUR business, where YOU are and where YOU want to go. You’re exactly where you need to be right now, no more and no less. There is huge learning and huge opportunity where you are right now.

#2: Say NO to doing it alone.

The word “solopreneur” instantly attracted me when I first saw it. You know why? Because it’s a misnomer. At first glance, it looks like you’re solo, independent and alone. Yet, you’re SO far from alone no matter how small your business. The resources around you are plentiful.

The point is it’s all about asking for HELP. You’ll be stronger when you reach out and get help. This is NOT a weakness.

In the words of one Solopreneur Survival Summit attendee, “I look back on my biz and realize every time I hit a barrier it was because I didn’t know how to do something technological or didn’t understand a process, and then stalled. If I had hired someone (a VA) to help in these times I would be oh so much further along than I am in my business.”

#3: It’s about abundance vs. scarcity. Abundant action.

There is more than enough business to go around for everyone. For example, look at the Solopreneur Survival Summit. I partnered with eight other solopreneurs who all coach women in a similar market to me.

At first glance, one would think they’re my competitors. Sure, they’re working with similar ideal clients. However, it’s not about competition. It’s about abundance and helping each other succeed.

We all believe that the right clients will find the right coach at the right time. And the coach will find the right client at the right time. I believe this is the same for any other solopreneur service provider out there. Your right clients will find you at the right time.

When you see the world from an abundance mindset, you’ll have room and energy for what’s going to come, and that is bound to be prosperous. You can be so much more with others than you can be alone.

Feel stuck? Get into abundant action. Where you put your energy is where your energy is going to go. One of my favourite mentors Gina Bell says, “Your energy flows where energy goes.” I love that. It’s so true, would you agree?

So, if you’re focusing on things not getting you closer to your big why, then why are you doing them? That’s why having a navigation point is so important because it gives you a decision making tool to ask if an opportunity or task gets you closer to or takes you further away from your vision.

One of my favourite “getting unstuck” things to do is to go on a power walk over the lunch hour. I find I’m more resourceful and clear after my walks, and ultimately better for my clients. What about you?

What are your favourite solopreneur success mindset tips? Please share a comment below.

To me, it’s a misnomer.

At first glance, it looks like a solo business owner is alone. Yet, that’s so far from the truth.

One of my favourite mantras is, “The more you reach out, the more resilient you are.”

My definition of a solopreneur (a.k.a. solo-entrepreneur or solo business owner) is:

Someone running a small business without employees.

She may hire contractor(s) to outsource services she doesn’t want to do.

She builds her business with systems, leverage, partnerships, and a whole lot of inner courage, personal leadership and laser focus.

Did you catch that last part? A whole lot of inner courage, personal leadership and laser focus.

It’s all about having a success mindset. I believe this is what makes – and breaks – solopreneur success.

When I started my own business, I didn’t realize how important mindset was to my own success. I worked in the corporate world for nearly 20 years and just assumed I’d be able to figure out the whole entrepreneurship thing.

Of course, being an entrepreneur is much, much different. In my mind, this has been the truest test of my own inner strength. And, honestly, at this point in my life, I’m totally up for it.

Because having a success mindset is so darn important in making a small business work, I decided to dedicate my blog to it.

I created this three-part series to share my 9 favourite solopreneur success mindset must haves.

Here are the first three:

#1: You’ve got to want it. Really want it. Oh yeah, and make sure you know your why.

If I asked you this question: Do you REALLY want to be an entrepreneur? What would you say?

Check in your gut. What do your instincts say?

Let me guess. You just felt a twinge of fear is creeping in. You may even be questioning if you can be successful.

Here’s what I want to say to you.

You CAN be a successful entrepreneur when you WANT to be a successful entrepreneur.

No matter what your reasons for starting a business, you’ve got to want it. You’ve got to want the journey of personal leadership, the test of your inner courage.

It’s certainly not a cakewalk. And, at the same time it can be one of the most rewarding experiences you can ever have.

So WHY did you start your business? Why do you do what you do? One of the reasons I’m a business coach for women solopreneurs is I get to live my life purpose: to help women be heard, be free and prosper.

Not only must you want to be in business, it is fundamental to know WHY you’re in business.

What about you? Here’s another article I wrote about finding your bigger why. Check it out.

#2: Believe it’s possible. It’s all about inner courage.

Running a business is the biggest test of your inner courage, inner strength and determination. If you’re up for it, you have a great opportunity at self-growth. It’s kind of like the ride of your life.

It’s all about how you see it. From one perspective, you can see being an entrepreneur as being difficult, grueling and challenging. Another way of looking at it is you’re blessed for having the opportunity to learn, grow and do something you haven’t done.

Yeah, it’s hard because you haven’t done it. But you get to learn it!

I had no idea being an entrepreneur would be this much of a journey of my inner courage and belief in myself. Your self-belief will grow when you’re in a journey of personal leadership like this.

The Solopreneur Survival Summit is a perfect example. I hadn’t done a virtual telesummit before. Let me tell you, there are 1,000, maybe even 10,000, moving parts to putting together a telesummit. In March I’m going to share with you what I learned.

At the beginning stages of organizing my telesummit, there were points when I wondered what I had done, it seemed like so much work. And, I have to say at times, I felt pretty exhausted from all the pieces required to pull it together.

Just switching mindset to say, “Wow, I’m doing something I’ve never done. I can actually teach people how to do this now. I can make it easier for people because I learned the hard way.” Let’s just say hat made all the difference in the world.

#3: Do your work. Take action daily. Start before you’re ready.

I love the book “Do Your Work” by Steven Pressfield. It’s all about putting one foot in front of the other every day. It’s about moving forward, evolving, growing, taking action.

If you ever feel stuck, get into action, get moving. Start before you’re ready. Good things will happen.

This is all about courage, all about jumping in and starting. When you feel you have to get it perfect before you start, it may be too late. You may miss the opportunity.

You need to get support on your idea before putting too much effort into trying to making it perfect. Leave enough latitude to be flexible enough to respond to the needs of the people you’re testing it with.

On the flipside, it’s important to say sometimes you need to be still to get clarity and evolve. Sometimes being still is the best action you can take to move forward and grow. In fact, you’ll find many of your answers in the stillness.

Guest post by Lisa Montanaro

Anyone who knows me (or even just meets me) can tell that I love my business and work really hard. But I’m not only a passionate entrepreneur, I am a multi-passionate person!

One of the worst mistakes I’ve ever made when I first became an entrepreneur was to “compartmentalize” my life. It dawned on me a few years ago that I don’t have a “personal life” and a “professional life,” but simply A LIFE.

Consequently, I do things when they feel right, which might include writing an article or taking care of client work on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and going on a bike ride, taking a yoga class or heading out with my dogs on a hike on a Wednesday afternoon. In fact, flexibility and freedom are part of what makes being self-employed so glorious. And yet, so many entrepreneurs continue to separate their personal and professional lives in ways that actually work to avoid any semblance of balance.

If a strict bifurcation of personal and professional is working for you, great. But ask yourself if it is truly working for you. Are you too regimented in your scheduling of work versus personal endeavors? Does your personal life always get short shifted at the expense of your professional life?

Examine whether you really feel balanced. If not, something has got to change. Mix things up and see how it feels. Try to tap into your natural energy flow and rhythm so that you can do tasks when you are in top form, and not when you are “supposed” to.

I realize this is easier said than done, and it is a constant battle to have the freedom and flexibility so many entrepreneurs crave. We still have to function within the 9-5 world we live in, and be able to serve our clients at a time when it is convenient for them.

But at least try to move away from the compartmentalization that can cause you to overwork and resent your business. If you are starting to feel burned out, perhaps you need to work in more time to cultivate your hobbies and passions. Not only will you feel rejuvenated, but you may actually be a better and more well-rounded entrepreneur because of your non-work related activities.

For example, I love to travel and explore new cultures. This could be viewed as only a personal activity. And yet, my travel and exploration of other cultures infiltrates my work in surprising and refreshing ways. I sometimes find myself “studying” the ways of other cultures and comparing them to my own in terms of productivity, work-life balance, attitudes on business, goal setting, etc.

This makes me a better productivity consultant, success coach, business strategist, speaker and writer for sure! Even a simple personal activity like taking a hike or bike ride can fill me with wonderful new ideas to write or speak about, help me work through a client issue that I am helping him or her with, or clear my mind to make space to create new programs and products.

The bottom line is that we all have to find that unique balance that makes the most sense for us. But I am proposing less of a balance in terms of this versus that, and more of a free flow of ideas, activities and use of time that feels authentic and allows you to be the best entrepreneur you can be. Because in the end, isn’t that what we all want?

You are YOU.

You are EXACTLY where you need to be.

It’s time to turn out the noise.

This week as I was recording a bonus module for my new group program (get details by registering for free Solopreneur Survival Summit), these words landed on me with a bang.

Let me tell you a little story.

I’m enrolled in a business development program for professional speakers, organized by CAPS, the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers.

Last week was orientation night. Each of us had three minutes in front of the group to share:

What inspires us

Why speaking

What gifts we bring to the group

Each enthusiastic newbie went up and did their little speech. It took no time to realize many of my peers are not newbies at all! Many ALREADY get paid to speak professionally.

My heart raced. My hands got sweaty. I looked for the door.

Nope, I thought. I’m not going anywhere. I can do this. I can do this.

Then my name was called. “Nadine Nicholson” said the program leader. It was my turn.

And, so I went.

Those three minutes went fast. It’s a blur.

Back at my chair, my head immediately went to the comparison game of how much better the others did.

As a coach, I KNOW the comparison trap is no good. I help my clients with this all the time.

I’m human. It happens to all of us. Just like it happens to my own business coach. Just like it happens to you.

The next day I started thinking how often the comparison trap faces us on a daily basis.

We subscribe to a barrage of blogs, hoping someone will have just the right answer to our struggles.

We see other entrepreneurs “looking” like they have it all together. Our inner critic says, “Just look at how great she’s doing. You are SO behind. Wow, you better work harder.”

Here’s the thing.

You are you. You are exactly where you need to be.

They are they. They are exactly where they need to be.

And we’re all in together.

What can you do when the comparison trap rears its head? (And it will.)

Say NO to doing it alone. One of the reasons I like the word “solopreneur” so much is because it’s a misnomer. It appears you’re all alone in this game. Yet, the LAST thing you are is alone. One of my mantras is, “The more you reach out, the more resilient you are.” So reach out, ask for help. If you see someone you respect, ask her story. I bet you’ll learn a ton from her and realize that you’re EXACTLY where you’re supposed to be.

Tune out the noise. I go through my email subscriptions every 90 days and cull them back to a manageable number. There are some I’d never cancel because I resonate so much with the writer.

Reflect on your big why. What’s YOUR reason for being in business? What are YOU trying to accomplish? Go back to that and remember NO ONE ELSE is doing exactly what you’re doing in the way you’re doing it. You’re unique. Here’s another article about your big why.

Tell your inner critic to go away in a fun way. Growing your business is going to take you into new and foreign territory. That’s when fear comes up. Fear often triggers comparing yourself with others. The inner critic on your shoulder is usually telling you a bunch of BS. So try this. The next time this happens, simply say, “Yeah, I hear you. I’ll tell you what. I want you to go on a LONG vacation. And here’s a ton of water to keep you well-nourished so you don’t rush back. Try it!

Share your tips n’ tricks in the comments below. What do YOU do when the comparison trap sets in?

P.S. There’s still time to get in on the Solopreneur Survival Summit. Attendees have until Monday, January 23 to download all the audios. They’re yours to keep!
